Airing Out Vaping Myths: The Facts, The Fiction, and the Flavorful

We care about your questions!
Here at MiVapeCo., we have learned just how difficult it can be to learn about the vaping industry as a consumer, and the questions that might arise about vaping from the sensationalized publicity of myths surrounding the vape lifestyle and hobby. We've taken some of the most spread myths about vaping to educate and inform our clients about real harm reduction through vape and its effectiveness!

Myth #1: Vaping is as harmful as smoking!

This is perhaps the most common myth surrounding vaping. While it is true that vaping involves inhaling a substance into the lungs, the reality is that vaping is far less harmful than smoking. According to a recent study by Public Health England, vaping is 95% less harmful than smoking. Vaping does not produce the tar and carbon monoxide associated with smoking, and the vast majority of chemicals in e-liquids are found in everyday products. Nothing beats fresh clean air in you lungs, but vaping exists to provide an alternative to the carcinogens and pollutants in tobacco smoke.

Myth #2: Vaping is a gateway to smoking!

Another common myth surrounding vaping is that it acts as a gateway to smoking. However, recent research proves that the inverse is true, just as it was intended to be! Studies recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that vaping may actually be a gateway out of smoking for adults, with the majority of participants in vaping having been introduced to vape as means to quick smoking cigarettes. As the vast majority of vapers are current or former smokers, its important to recognize that vaping is a counter to tobacco, and many devices are designed to help vapers cease their smoke cravings.

Myth #3: Vaping is unregulated and unsafe!

Vaping is regulated in most countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom. In the US, e-cigarettes are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), while in the UK, they are regulated by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). These agencies ensure that e-cigarettes meet safety and quality standards. Here at MiVapeCo., we are proud to stock our shelves with FDA regulation compliant brands (with certification to boot!) to bring you the best in the industry!

Myth #4: Vaping causes popcorn lung over time!

Popcorn lung, or bronchiolitis obliterans, is a condition that was once associated with inhaling diacetyl, a flavoring agent found in microwave popcorn. We are proud to state that diacetyl has been banned in e-liquids since 2016, and has never found a place on our shelves. All vape juices we carry are viewed and certified with PMTA compliance to promise safe and delicious flavors without risk of injury to your lungs.

Myth #5: Vaping is just as addictive as smoking!

While both smoking and vaping involve nicotine, which is an addictive substance, vaping is generally less addictive than smoking! This is because e-liquids are available in varying strengths, allowing vapers to gradually reduce their nicotine intake, or begin at strengths already below their previous cigarette consumption. Vaping does not produce the same ritualistic behaviors associated with smoking either that can be habit-inducing, such as lighting a cigarette or ashing. Though vape can be more readily available to consume than smoking, conscious action and cessation are important tools to keep vape from becoming overly addictive. Try taking time outs from your vape, or leaving it at home during outings, to prevent habitual vaping over what is necessary for your quitting journey.

Myth #6: Vaping is just as harmful as secondhand smoke!

Secondhand smoke is a well-known health hazard, but secondhand vapor is much less harmful. A study published in the Journal of Aerosol Science found that secondhand vapor contains far fewer harmful chemicals than secondhand smoke. Additionally, the amount of nicotine in secondhand vapor is negligible, meaning that it is unlikely to be addictive. Though it helps to be conscious of those around you who might be uncomfortable or vaping only in approved areas, it's good to know that vaping helps remove another harmful aspect of smoking cigarettes.

Myth #7: Vaping is designed to get young people hooked on nicotine!

While it is true that vaping has become popular among young people, the reality is that vaping is used by people of adults of all of-age demographics! In fact, a survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that the vast majority of those who vape are over the age of 25.  Vaping is being used as a harm reduction tool by adults looking to quit smoking, and is responsibly regulated to protect against sale or distribution to minors. Though nostalgic, sweet, and candy-like flavors exist in the vape market, these are designed for and with adult use in mind. As smoking is a pleasurable experience, many users gravitate to sweeter flavor alternatives to still enjoy the action of vaping as they did smoking, and are subject to personal taste and appeal, just the same as tobacco or fruit-based flavorings.

It can be hard to separate fact from fiction during all the buzz over vape, but you can trust in the research and science behind the best way to quit cigarettes!
